Artists Ville Haimala, Essi Kausalainen, Kimmo Modig and Hanna Husberg have been chosen for residencies in the UK and Ireland. Ville Haimala will be in residence in Lighthouse in Brighton, Essi Kausalainen in Wysing Arts Center in Cambridge, Kimmo Modig in The White Building (SPACE) in London and Hanna Husberg in Temple Bar Studios & Gallery in Dublin.

“All the four artists are working in a wonderfully open-minded and border-crossing way,” says Pauliina Ståhlberg, the director of the Finnish Institute in London. “The Institute has found residency programmes an invaluable way for artists to develop their practice and gain wider international networks. We trust residencies greatly benefit the Finnish art scene as a whole.”

The Finnish Institute in London organised the residency programme in collaboration with Frame Visual Art Finland and Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP).

DJ, artist, producer and musician Ville Haimala was chosen for a residency at Brighton’s Lighthouse Studio. Haimala currently lives in Berlin, where he co-runs the record label Black Ocean with fellow artist/architect Martti Kalliala, renowned for their duo Renaissance Man. Nowadays they are releasing music by various Berlin-based emerging artists. Since 2012, Haimala has been focusing on more experimental work. At Lighthouse, he is looking forward to researching the soundscapes of the future of hearing.

Performance artist Essi Kausalainen will be in residency at Wysing Arts Centre. The basis of Kausalainen’s artistic practice is the human body with its senses, thoughts and instincts. By creating performances, video installations and drawings she makes notes on humans and other living things. The 17th century farmhouse in Cambridge provides alternative environments and structures for artistic research, experimentation, discovery and production, out of which emerges an ongoing programme of exhibitions and public events.

Artist Kimmo Modig works creatively with technology. Having a background as a sound designer, Modig’s projects often include vivid talking and are usually presented on stage or online. His residency takes place at London’s centre for art, technology and sustainability, The White Building, part of leading visual arts organisation SPACE.

Stockholm based artist Hanna Husberg will travel to Ireland and stay at a contemporary art gallery and artists' studio complex located in the heart of Dublin. Through video and installation projects, Husberg investigates how we perceive and relate to our environment in times of anthropogenic climate change. Housing thirty artists' studios for professional visual artists working in a variety of media, Dublin’s TBG+S offers Husberg a space for working as well as a chance to participate in open studios, events, talks and screenings.
