Irish/Finnish Artist Exchange Award 2008

Heli Rekula is the Finnish artist recipient of the 2008 Irish/Finnish Artist Exchange Award between Ireland and Finland. This is the second year of the award, which provides support for artists to undertake a residency at the Temple Bar Gallery and Studios in Dublin. The award is a collaboration between the Institute, HIAP (Helsinki International Artist-in-Residence Programme), FRAME (The Finnish Fund for Art Exchange), Temple Bar Cultural Trust and Arts Council of Ireland.

Heli Rekula is working with lens-based media; film, video and photography. During her residency in Ireland, she’ll be working on landscape photography. Over the past seventeen years, she has exhibited extensively in both Finland and abroad. She participated in the 2001 Venice Biennale, the main exhibition Plateau of Humankind, curated by Harald Szeemann and was the recipient of the 2002 Ars Fennica Award. Currently, Rekula is working on her PHD at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. The first artistic component of her research, an extensive retrospective exhibition DESERT (1989-2004), was exhibited in 2005 at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. In the same year she was awarded the State Prize for Photography Art. She is currently living and working in Helsinki.

The Irish recipient of the Exchange Award, Niamh O’Malley will be in residence at Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki 1.10.-31.12. 2008.
