Story space

The Story Space programme supports Finnish literature, story telling and animation with the aim of networking artists working with narration. Cross-platform ways for experiencing and telling stories will be central to defining the contemporary spaces for stories in this programme strand.

FINNISH DEBUT NOVEL PUBLISHED IN BRITAIN

'Tulagi Hotel', the debut novel by Finnish author Heikki Hietala is the first book written in English by a Finn to be published outside Finland. It is a tale of US Marine pilot Jack McGuire, who returns to his former combat zone in the Pacific after World War II, and founds a hotel in the island paradise he once defended from the Japanese. 'Tulagi Hotel' is published by Diiarts. Read more


WINNER OF THE FICTION TRANSLATION COMPETITION SELECTED

Arttu Ahava has been selected as the winner of the fiction translation competition initiated by the Finnish Institute in London and the Finnish Literature Export organisation (FILI). The second place in the competition was shared by Ilona Fogel and Iiris Pursiainen. The competition is a part of the Institute's literature export programme. Read more


STORY SPACES: OPENING DOORS FOR FINNISH LITERATURE IN BRITAIN

It has been a busy year for the Institute's Story Spaces literature export programme. During 2009 the Institute created networking opportunities for Finnish and British publishers, researched Finnish literature in the British marketplace, compiled information about the key British publishers and organised a translation competition in order to find talented new translators. DUSKY, BRIGHT, DUSKY: ARRESTING COLLECTION OF EEVA-LIISA MANNER'S POETRY PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH

The English publisher, Waterloo Press, released a new collection of poetry by one of the most significant Finnish modernists, Eeva-Liisa Manner, in November. Dusky, Bright, Dusky is the publisher's first translated volume. Read more


LONDON SEMINAR FOR PUBLISHERS 12.-13.11.2009

In November, the Finnish Institute hosted a two-day seminar for Finnish publishers. The event acts both as a platform for sharing information and ideas while offering networking opportunities. Read more

JANI RUSCICA: TRAVELOGUE - ANIMATION IN CONTEMPORARY ART;

Helsinki-based artist and filmmaker Jani Ruscica took part in a 2-month animation residency as part of the Magic Lantern programme at Camden Arts Centre in London. The Magic Lantern animation programme is an ongoing series of commissions, screenings, collaborations and events centring on animation. Defining animation in the broadest sense the programme aims to incorporate as wide a variety of artists' practice and possibilities for engaging with animated film as possible. Read more

GREAT NUMBER OF ENTRIES RECEIVED FOR THE TRANSLATION COMPETITION

The fiction translation competition launched by the Finnish Institute and FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange has closed. Close to 120 translators from six different countries entered the competition and translated Maritta Lintunen’s short story “Piinaviikko” from the collection Ovisilmä (WSOY 2006) into English. The judges are currently reviewing the texts and the results will be announced in November. Read more

RECENT TRANSLATED FINNISH LITERATURE IN THE UK

The Finnish Institute has compiled a list of translated Finnish literature published in the UK in the 21st century. The mapping of translated literature is part of the Institute's Story Space literature project which aims to raise the level of Finnish involvement in the British literary market.
