Media space

The programme explores the relationship between local communities and local media in the changing broadcast environment. Central to the programme are projects examining the challenges that the current digital switchover faces vis-à-vis the civil society. The programme offers a platform for artists who are developing new content, technologies and production models for the changing broadcast field.

The aim of the programme is to promote debate around the place of local media in today’s society and to network and facilitate exchange between artists working in this area.

ARTIST-LED LOCAL TELEVISION IS SHOWING THE WAY

An international expert group, invited by the Finnish Institute in London and FACT, UK's leading centre for digital culture, met in Liverpool, June 2011, to discuss the role of local community media in building citizenship, telling stories and giving people a voice through DIY participation. URBAN MEDIA IN LIVERPOOL AND HELSINKI

The Finnish Institute in London has initiated an artist-in-residence project between two community television channels, Liverpool-based Tenantspin and Helsinki-based m2hz. The exchange contributes to Media Facades 2010 a European festival of media art and urban media between 27 August and 3 October, 2010. Read more

JUHANA MOISANDER AT ABANDON NORMAL DEVICES FESTIVAL

'Unspooling - Artists & Cinema' is a celebration of 25-year-old Cornerhouse, Manchester's centre for contemporary visual arts and film. Produced as part of the Abandon Normal Devices Festival (AND), the ambitious group exhibition displays 20 international artists, including Finnish artist Juhana Moisander. Read more

FINNISH INDIE AT AV FESTIVAL 10

Two Finnish indie bands, Shogun Kunitoki and Kiila, performed live at AV Festival 10, UK's flagship festival of electronic and visual arts, music and moving image. The theme of AV Festival 10 theme was energy: a universal force that connects, transforms and renews life. Read more

HELSINKI DOCUMENTARIES AT NICE 2009

Two Finnish city documentaries launched the 2009 NICE Festival in Liverpool - Helsinki Forever (2008) by Peter von Bagh and Hanasaari (2009) by Hannes Vartiainen and Pekka Veikkolainen. Hanna Harris from the Finnish Institute was a guest speakers at the event. Read more

POP-UP LANDSCAPES - SURVIVAL AND INTERDEPENDENCY IN A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

Pop-Up Landscapes explores the ideas of survival, interdependency and the relationship between our individual landscapes and their interdependency to our environments. The art and research project launched its first phase Friday 29th May 2009 in Bristol's Pervasive Media Studio with a series of discussions and presentations. Read more

ISEA 2009

Finnish media art was represented in ISEA2009 by two interesting projects; M.A.R.I.N, a mobile residency programme set on board a catamaran sailboat, and Empty Stomach by artists Andy Best and Merja Puustinen. Read more
