FINLAND REPRESENTED BY FOUR ARTISTS AT THE LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL 2010 Liverpool Biennial is UK’s biggest and one of the most important art events, bi-annually bringing together international and UK talent for celebration of contemporary art. This year’s Liverpool Biennial exhibits works from four different Finnish artists; Antti Laitinen, Kaarina Kaikkonen, Jani Ruscica and Johanna Lecklin.
ANSSI SOJAKKA JOINS TWO BRITISH ARTISTS IN GROUP EXHIBITION Page 1 is the first of a series of exhibition projects with the aim to promote cultural cooperation among Finnish and British contemporary artists living in London. The exhibition shows past and recent works by artist Anssi Sojakka together with British artists Paul Robinson and Graham Carrick.
CENTRIFUGAL: SEQENCE VI IN BELFAST Centrifugal - the perennial art project bringing together artists, educators, architects and theorists from three European edge cities, Helsinki, Belfast and Zagreb, reached a pinnacle with its Centrifugal: Sequence VI in Belfast. The sequence presented a range of events in connection with the launch of The Centrifugal Book of Europe.
EIJA-LIISA AHTILA'S RETURN TO LONDON Finnish film and video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila is back in London with her first major solo exhibition since Tate Modern 2002. Ahtila is exhibiting three important moving image installations never before seen in England at London's prestigious Parasol unit from 26th February to 25th April 2010.
JA JA JA MUSIC: NEW NORDIC TALENT WITH A DIFFERENCE Ja Ja Ja is a club night showcasing the best emerging talent from the Nordic countries at central London venue The Lexington. The February show presented three Nordic artists selected by Bella Union MD Simon Raymonde: Finnish-American VUK, Norwegian Ungdomskulen, and Danish The Good The Bad.
ELINA BROTHERUS EXHIBITION AT WAPPING PROJECT BANKSIDE Solo exhibition by Elina Brotherus launched the new gallery space, Wapping Project Bankside in London. The gallery space is the brainchild of Jules Wright, the founder and creative director of the famously inspired gallery space, Wapping Project situated in an old hydraulic power station in Wapping, East London.
NEW FINNISH DOCUMENTARY IN THE UK London's week long documentary event, London International Documentary Festival, LIDF, showed four documentaries by Finnish filmmakers in 2009. The 2009 festival was themed Conversations in Film. The Finnish directors showing at LIDF were Kiti Luostarinen with Palna's daughters/Palnan tyttäret (2008), Mia Halme withBig Boy/Iso poika (2007), John Webster withRecipes for Disaster/Katastrofin aineksia (2008)and Anastasia Lapsui and Markku Lehmuskallio with Nedarma/Travelling (2007).
EIJA-LIISA AHTILA EXHIBITION AT VOID Eija-Liisa Ahtila made her Irish solo debut at the highly acclaimed, artist-led VOID gallery in Derry, with two of her installations works: ‘The Present and ‘The Fisherman'.
AKI RISSANEN AT THE 12 POINTS! 09 JAZZ FESTIVAL Young musicians from Finland, Holland, Norway, Denmark, France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain and The UK provided a stylistically diverse line up at Dublin's 12 Points! Festival 2009. Aki Rissanen was the Finnish lone solo performer at the festival.
RENJA LEINO -‘JUST ANYBODY' & ‘ABSENT MINDS'
Renja Leino’s new series ‘Just Anybody’ was made in England while she was an Art Council England International Photography Research Fellow 2007 hosted by The Winchester Gallery and managed by Fotonet. Using a mobile phone camera she took thousands of photographs of people out and about in London and by the seaside.
