Emmi Salonen’s new book Common Interest explores document design in the fields of arts, culture, academia, public sector and charities.

Emmi Salonen’s new book Common Interest explores document design in the fields of arts, culture, academia, public sector and charities. Besides working for the Finnish Institute, Salonen has collaborated with charities and cultural organisations like the Prince’s Trust and Tate Britain and corporate clients such as Artek and Pod.

Common Interest is a practical guide and a source of graphic creativity for designers and clients alike. The resourceful and creative design solutions, achieved without large corporate budgets, focus on economical and environmental solutions as well as unique production and finishing techniques. Each study lists print and paper choices, together with details on finishing.

"I hope this book will work as a source of inspiration for designers, as a guidance for students and as a reference book for design commissioners", Salonen explains.

The book presents close to one hundred case studies, including the award-winning (P)review 2008-2009 publication Salonen designed for the Finnish Institute.

"As a graphic designer, I find designing a book to be a special honour. It's not often we get to create a 3D object, and one that people will potentially hold onto for years to come. By nature, our work is often much more disposable".
