  • The Finnish Institute in London's website and newsletter have been given a makeover by illustrator Jaakko Pallasvuo.

Klaus Haapaniemi designed the Institute's previous Finnish folklore inspired look in 2008, but this year sees a launch of a series of annually changing commissions.

Each year a new artist is chosen to create a visual image for the Institute's website and newsletter. The series of commissions are to offer a platform for young artists, designers and illustrators to introduce their work in the UK and create new opportunities for international exchange and collaboration.

Jaakko Pallasvuo (b. 1987) illustrates, draws comics and studies fine art at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Besides Finnish magazines, his work has been seen in anthologies and zines in Great Britain, Belgium and France.

"I think my first thought when I started drawing the image was London's age and how you can still see the Roman influence reflected in its shape and architecture. I also wanted the picture to have certain lightness and chaos - which I associate with the fast moves and turns of contemporary culture."

Pallasvuo held his first exhibition at Napa Gallery in March 2008. In addition to meticulous drawing, he likes to work with watercolours, ink and collage.
