Three Finnish plays showing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
2-26.8.2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival presents three Finnish plays: Preen Back Yer Lugs! directed by Aleksis Meaney, Bad Boy Eddie by Iiristina Varilo and Mammoth by Leea Klemola.
Edinburgh Fringe started 1947 and is now the world’s largest theater festival. More than 2500 performances can be seen from 60 different countries. Plays have been modified for the festival: performances are up to 1.5 hours and texts are adapted to the local audiences.
Preen Back Yer Lugs! (Svensk resning, Svenska Teatern)
Written by Anders Slotten. Directed by Aleksis Meaney. It’s year 2108. World War Seven has destroyed the entire planet. And yet, miraculously, one small, insignificant country on the outermost fringes of the British Isles has survived. In future Scotland, ruled by an evil clone of a famous 20th century Scottish politician, a small band of English freedom fighters rise up against their Caledonian oppressors.
Bad Boy Eddie (Paha lapsi, Kajaani Town Theatre)
Written by Anna Krogerus. Directed by Iiristina Varilo. An encouraging story of invisible child's struggle to find his place in his family and in the world. Black humour and realistic descriptions are seen from a child's point of view. Finnish production with Scottish cast: Scott Kyle (Best Actor, Stage Awards 2010), Jo Freer, Mary Gapinski and Alex Donald.
Mammoth (Jessikan pentu, Kuopio Town Theatre)
Written and directed by Leea Klemola.Mammoth returns Homo sapiens back to nature. Jessica has rented a theatre space at the Pleasance. She is not content with how her son was raised. So through fiction and a webcam she tries to explain to her son why their family got lost from the path so common to all. Mammoth is simultaneously hilarious and melancholic; it deals with our human relationship with nature and fellow creatures, but also with technology. The play shows that development and progression are not always synonymous.
All three plays are selected and supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. They are part of the From Start to Finnish project that aims to showcase Finnish theater in the UK and network theater professionals in Britain and Finland.
