Jani Ruscica: Travelogue - Animation in Contemporary Art
Helsinki-based artist and filmmaker Jani Ruscica has just begun his 2-month animation residency as part of the Magic Lantern programme at Camden Arts Centre in London. The residency is supported by the Finnish Institute in London, FRAME - Finnish Fund for Art Exchange and Animate Projects.
The Magic Lantern animation programme is an ongoing series of commissions, screenings, collaborations and events centring on animation. Defining animation in the broadest sense the programme aims to incorporate as wide a variety of artists' practice and possibilities for engaging with animated film as possible.
Jani Ruscica is an artist and film maker based in Helsinki. His main area of interest lies in examining how one defines one's location, a sense of place in the world, and how and why that definition can change. Working collaboratively is a key part of this process, and to date Ruscica has worked with groups and individuals including theatre makers, beat boxers, dancers and scientists.
Ruscica will use the Magic Lantern residency to develop a new animated film based on the idea of a travelogue. Drawing on both contemporary and historical texts, Ruscica will work with theatre makers and mime artists from the Central School of Speech and Drama to develop and film a series of shadow plays based on narratives about travelling to and around London.
The final film will be screened in April 2010, and will subsequently be available on the Animate Projects website, www.animateprojects.org.
