EIJA-LIISA AHTILA RETURNS TO LONDON
Image: Where is Where? (2008)
Finnish film and video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila is back in London with her first major solo exhibition since Tate Modern 2002. Ahtila is exhibiting three important moving image installations never before seen in England at London's prestigious Parasol unit from 26th February to 25th April 2010.
Where is Where? (2008) is a haunting and layered consideration of how the interpretation of history affects our perception of reality. It tells a story of a dramatic event that occurred during the Algerian War, when two young Algerian boys killed their French playmate in a colonialist conflict. The Hour of Prayer (2005) is a short tale about human nature, renunciation and death. Filmed in West Africa, the third installation Fishermen/Etudes No. 1 (2007) recounts the tale of a group of men who repeatedly and frantically attempt to get out to sea in the face of strong winds and heavy seas, in the hope of earning their daily food.
Eija-Liisa Ahtila's fictional stories emerge from interviews and extensive research as well as her own observation and memory. Throughout the world Ahtila has captured public interest with her masterfully crafted narratives, striking portrayal of characters and highly individual mode of expression. The viewer of Ahtila's films is engaged both physically and emotionally - as the films are shown on multiple screens or within complex installations, her stories unfold simultaneously within time and space.
In conjunction with the exhibition a one-off screening of Where is Where? will be held at the Prince Charles Cinema 14th April 2010, followed by a discussion with Eija-Liisa Ahtila and Stuart Comer, curator of Film at Tate Modern. Parasol unit is also hosting a symposium titled ‘Considering the Work of Eija-Liisa Ahtila' 13th March 2-5 pm with speakers including Taru Elfving.
Eija-Liisa Ahtila exhibition is open from February 26th to April 25th 2010 at Parasol Unit. Private view February 25th 6.30 pm - 9 pm.
