CLOSEUP AT RCA: CELEBRATING EUROPEAN PANRTNERSHIPS

Ten years of European collaborative projects between new graduates of the Royal College of Art and industry partners across the European Union in people-centred design are celebrated in a major exhibition during the London Design Festival 2009.

RCA's this years CLOSEUP exhibition focuses on people-centred design and European partnerships.Ten years of European collaborative projects between new graduates of the Royal College of Art and industry partners across the European Union in people-centred design are celebrated in a major exhibition during the London Design Festival 2009.

The CLOSEUP show presents design projects by the Helen Hamlyn Research Associates at the RCA (1999-2009) in the RCA's Lower Galleries. Curated by the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the College, the exhibition is supported by the Finnish Institute in London and the European Commission Representation in the UK to mark the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.

Exhibits, including furniture, products, communications and films, will all explore inclusive design, workplace design and design for ageing and patient safety.

Finland will be represented by furniture designer Lotta Väänänen's work with UK charity Leonard Cheshire on new products for disabled workers, and by Nokia, which commissioned a study on mobile communications for older people, called ‘Transitions'.

CLOSEUP will also feature projects involving graduates and companies from Holland, Poland, Sweden, Italy, France, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and the UK .

The exhibition showcases the latest batch of Research Associate projects as well as taking a look at the influence of the Hamlyn Research Associates programme, which matches new College design graduates with external partners, over the past decade.

"The CLOSEUP exhibition shows how partnerships between new RCA graduates from all over Europe and progressive European manufacturers can create new design ideas to improve quality of life. We are very grateful for the support of the European Commission Representation in the UK and the many European embassies in London.", enthuses Jeremy Myerson, head of RCA Innovation and the Helen Hamlyn Research Associates at the Royal College of Art.

CLOSEUP runs from 25 September to 6 October 2009 at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU 10am-6pm. Daily. Entrance via Jay Mews
