DancEUnion CELEBRATES NEW EUROPEAN DANCE STARS AT THE SOUTHBANK CENTRE

  • on_ice_danceunion_netti

From 15 to 17 March, rising dance stars from across Europe will present new contemporary choreography and physical theatre in the halls and spaces of Southbank Centre. The three-day festival introduces the work of 21 emerging European choreographers and companies from 20 different countries. Finland is represented by On Ice; a solo performance created by artist and choreographer Maija Hirvanen and performed by artist Eeva Muilu.

On Ice draws a portrait of a contemporary woman in a social democratic society. The performer, disguised in a cheerleader outfit, goes through demands of femininity and humanhood through 49 actions, 49 movements and 49 screams.

DancEUnion will also include a four-day residency-style masterclass for the choreographers and artists in the lead up to the performances. The residency will be run by Jonathan Burrows, a renowned British choreographer and dance teacher.

DancEUnion was first piloted in 2008 and the festival is presented by the EU Commission in UK, European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and Southbank Centre, with the participation and support of all the participating EU countries, their cultural institutes and embassies.
