Helsinki at London Design Festival 2012
In addition to the Institute's talk event, HEL/LO – Let's Talk About Tomorrow, Helsinki makes its contribution to the London Design Festival with a few well-chosen events.
Wonderful Water
Wonderwater Café travels from Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, to London popping up at Leila's Shop in Shoreditch during London Design Festival, 12–23 September. The project explores the relationship between food and water consumption and is designed to raise awareness of the water footprint and impact of what we eat on local and global water use. Leila McAlister's responsibly sourced and seasonal menu will be utilised to illustrate how much water it takes to produce our favourite foods, and highlight the importance of considering water consumption when making culinary decisions.
Wonderwater Café is part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme. The first Café took place in Beijing Design Week 2011 and more are currently being planned, including Wonderwater Cafe Shanghai.
Design Festivals – Who needs them?
Right at the heart of London Design Festival, critical yet positive account is being presented of the growth of the design festival movement and Britain's, not just London's, leading role in it. Are they good for the host cities and good for design, or do they blur the lines of definition and take our eye off the ball?
Speakers of the event held at designjunction in Bloomsbury include Ben Evans, director of London Design Festival, Kari Korkman of Helsinki Design Week, Beatrice Galilee, chief curator of 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale and director of The Gopher Hole, Joseph Grima, editor in chief of Domus and co-curator of the inaugural Istanbul Design Biennial. The discussion is chaired by Johnny Tucker, the editor of Blueprint magazine.
